“Community is messy; be wary of those trying so hard to make it clean”

…while Jewish organizations should be allowed to exercise caution about their overt structural partnerships with those protesting them outside, the quick mapping of that caution onto the tarring of individuals is a dangerous and insidious business. It is astonishing to me how the American Jewish community, ostensibly thriving in and thanks to democracy, is downright medieval in its communal policing. It will not hold, and it shouldn’t. Community is messy; be wary of those trying so hard to make it clean.
